Guide to Choice Taxation: The Simpler, Smarter, Better way to Govern
The revolutionary plan that gives us the freedom and the power we need to get all the nice things Republicans don't want us to have.
As fans of facts and reality are well aware, Republicans are why we can’t have nice things. Nice things like: Medicare for all, a minimum wage that’s a living wage, paid parental leave, paid sick leave, universal pre-K, solutions to our affordable housing crisis, and all the other nice things that make for a successful pursuit of happiness. We can’t have any of those things because of Republicans. And that’s a problem! But it’s a problem we can fix with Choice Taxation.
The Choice Taxation plan is built on the simple recognition that the key to getting nice things is no longer allowing Republicans a say in the matter. The plan shows us how, by taking a fresh and innovative approach to taxation and governance, we can prevent Republicans from having a say in whether those of us on the Left can finally have all the nice things our peers in other wealthy nations have long enjoyed.
Here are the 5 steps involved in this revolutionary plan:
STEP 1: Create four new partisan tax systems and put them in charge of collecting and managing most of our domestic spending tax dollars.
STEP 2: Put the new tax systems in charge of education, healthcare, and entitlement programs, and then end all government involvement in those critical issues.
STEP 3: Put the new tax systems in charge of creating and enforcing most of the rules and regulations that govern our private sector businesses and workplaces.
STEP 4: End all federal funding.
STEP 5: Downsize or eliminate all the governmental departments and agencies that currently oversee the issues the tax systems will eventually govern.
And here’s a look at the reasoning and rationale behind each one of those five steps along with and an explanation on how those of us on the Left will benefit once each step is completed.
Step 1: Create four new partisan tax systems and put them in charge of collecting and managing most of our domestic spending tax dollars.
As long as we continue to let our government collect and manage all of our domestic spending tax dollars, Republicans will continue to have a say in how all those dollars are spent. With that say they’ll have the power to block, deny, or end the funding needed for the policies and programs that are intended to provide us with nice things.
So the first thing Choice Taxation directs us to do, is create four new partisan tax systems and put them in charge of collecting and managing the majority of our domestic spending tax dollars. Those four new tax systems are:
The Progressive Tax System
The Democrat Tax System
The Republican Tax System
The MAGA Tax System
While our government will continue to collect and manage the tax dollars that fund things like public safety, infrastructure projects, and national defense, the tax dollars that fund the domestic issues that govern nice things will be collected and managed instead by these four new partisan tax systems.
Each tax system will be set up by leaders and lawmakers who aligned with that particular system’s ideology (for instance, the Progressive tax system would be set up by members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus), and each one will operate independently of our government and one another.
Once the systems are up and running, Americans will have the freedom to apply to join the tax system of their choice, and the tax systems, in turn, will have the freedom to extend or deny membership to anyone as they see fit. With this freedom, the Progressive and Democrat Tax Systems will be able to deny membership to any Republicans who might apply. Excluded from our systems, Republicans will no longer be able to stop us from using our tax dollars to fund nice things.
Step 2: Put the tax systems in charge of education, healthcare, and entitlement programs, and then end all government involvement in those critical issues.
As long as we leave our government in charge of education, healthcare, and entitlement programs, Republicans will continue to have a say in those life-defining issues. With that say, they’ll have the power to deny us nice things like student loan forgiveness, low-cost prescription drugs, and the social security benefits we’ve earned.
To get around this problem, step two of Choice Taxation directs us to put the new partisan tax systems in charge of education, healthcare, and entitlement programs, and then ends all government involvement in those critical issues.
With the tax systems in charge, both the Progressive and Democrat Tax Systems will be free to create, fund, and govern their own education system, healthcare system, and entitlement programs. And, crucially, Republicans won’t get a say in any of it.
To ensure Republicans no longer have a say in our public k-12 schools and public hospitals, those physical resources will be divided up proportionately among the new tax systems. Ultimately, this will ensure that even if we live in the reddest county in the reddest state, there will still be schools and hospitals in our area that are governed exclusively by our likeminded peers with no input or involvement from Republicans.
As for public colleges and universities, they won’t be divided up among the tax systems but there will be a change to how they’re funded. Instead of getting a sizable amount of their funding from our government, that funding will instead come from the new tax systems. With the tax systems in charge, our nation's colleges and universities will be free to decide for themselves which tax system, or systems, they accept funding from. This freedom means schools will be free to reject any funding from the MAGA and Republican Tax Systems and in the process, ensure their funding is never contingent upon them capitulating to the authoritarian demands of fascists, white nationalists, and other right-wing deplorables.
Meanwhile, the tax systems will decide for themselves which colleges and universities they want to fund. This will mean that Republicans won’t be able to force the Progressive and Democrat Tax Systems to fund any colleges or universities that have bought into MAGA’s culture war hysterics and replaced DEI, science, and facts with white nationalism, propaganda, and lies.
Step 3: Put the tax systems, instead of our government, in charge of creating and enforcing most of the rules and regulations that govern our private sector businesses and workplaces.
As long as we continue to allow our government to be the sole regulator of America’s private sector, Republicans will continue to have a say in all the rules and regulations that are meant to keep America’s capitalists in check. As a result, those rules and regulations will do little if anything to prevent corporate America from using, abusing, cheating, and scamming American consumers and workers.
So, to protect us all from capitalists run amok, the third step of Choice Taxation directs us to put the new tax systems in charge of creating and enforcing most of the rules and regulations that govern our private sector businesses and workplaces.
Most, but not all.
Our government will remain in charge of regulations that affect the general public (e.g., vehicle emission standards, zoning laws, and the rules governing hazardous waste disposal). But regulations that affect consumers and workers (e.g., food safety standards, nutrition labeling requirements, workplace safety rules, and labor laws) will become the domain of the tax systems.
Once the tax systems have crafted their regulations, American companies and corporations will be free to apply for membership in the tax system, or systems, of their choice. However, the tax systems won’t be required to approve membership for every business that applies. Each system will also be able to revoke a business’s membership should that business stop operating within the parameters the system has set. With these powers, the Progressive and Democratic Tax Systems will each be able to build and maintain a Republican-free private sector composed exclusively of businesses that share our values, beliefs, and views on just how free the free market should be.
Step 4: End all federal funding..
As long as we continue to allow our federal government to provide funding assistance to states, Congressional Republicans will continue to have the power to commandeer blue state tax dollars and redirect those dollars into red state coffers. In order to end this forced redistribution of blue state wealth to red states, Choice Taxation directs us in step four, to end all federal funding. Because after all, nothing says states’ rights like blue states having the right to decide for themselves whether they continue to subsidize all those poorly governed red states.
With the tax systems in charge of education, healthcare, and entitlement programs, state and local governments will no longer have to fund those costly issues. Instead, states will be able to devote the majority of their general revenue towards their infrastructure projects and disaster recovery efforts.
While the states will cover the bulk of those costs themselves, they’ll still be able to call upon other states for funding assistance. However, every state will retain the right to decide for itself whether it answers those calls or sends them straight to voicemail.
Step 5: Downsize or eliminate all the governmental departments and agencies that currently oversee the issues the tax systems will eventually govern.
Each department and agency in our government provides Republicans with an excuse to collect our tax dollars and an opportunity to shove their politics down our throats. Republicans will continue to have all those excuses and opportunities as long as our government remains at its current size and scope. So in step five, Choice Taxation has us limit those excuses and opportunities by downsizing or eliminating all the local, state, and federal departments and agencies that currently oversee the issues that the tax systems will eventually govern.
Each tax system will then be free to create, fund, and run its own version of any of the eliminated departments and agencies. Or, if they want, they can do so in partnership with another tax system. The decision to do so will have to be one that both systems agree to as Choice Taxation is all about choice, never force. As such, neither our government nor the tax systems will ever be able to force one system to partner with another.
For far too long, we’ve allowed Republicans to run rough shod over us. We’ve given them unfettered access to all our domestic spending tax dollars, we’ve allowed them a say in our schools, healthcare system, and entitlement programs, we’ve let them ensure corporate America can use and abuse workers and consumers with little consequence, and we’ve let them use our money to subsidize their states. But perhaps worst of all, we’ve let them deny us all the nice things we deserve.
All this permissiveness has given way to a dangerous and deranged GOP, one that’s hell on destroying our democracy and replacing it with a fascist kakistocracy. So, before Republicans succeed in completely destroying our country, let’s adopt Choice Taxation. Because not only do we deserve nice things, but we’re gonna need them in order to survive and thrive amid Trump, Elon, and all the other deplorables.
